Description

On a winter evening in 2005, while sipping hot coffee, all alone, at my favourite haunting place, India International Centre in Delhi, without any specific reason, I suddenly recalled some stanzas of “Water and Wood” composed by Je Gungthangpa which I had read many years ago. It caused me to think of whether I could try to write something in imitation of it. So I wrote few stanzas “Of Stone”, as my first name Doboom means ‘stone vase’. The stanzas seemed to form smoothly. Feeling a sense of receiving some inspiration, every evening during a month I wrote a couple of stanzas before going to bed, and completed the stone part.

Meanwhile, I had requested His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a teaching on “The Path to Enlightenment” and got the opportunity of receiving it in Dharamsala. So, based on some comprehension of the teachings, I started writing stanzas “Of Earth” and completed it at the end of the teachings which lasted several days. Without special effort, these two sections took shape as dealing with society and spirituality respectively. The Tibetan version of these verses was published as a booklet by Drete Dhargon Monastic Cultural Society. Generally, I consider myself an uneducated person in many senses of the word. So, it is a brave attempt from my side to imitate Je Gungthangpa, the great Lama of 18th Century. Nevertheless, in the colophon of praise to White Manjushri which is written in the same style as Lama Tsongkhapa’s praise to saffron Manjushri, Je Gungthangpa himself said “There is no reason for others to blame me for following a noble person; I am but like the birds who try to follow the king of birds (Garuda)”. Appreciating the heavenly path of the feathered friends, I the butterfly, think of myself as fortunate to have completed this work. The English version of the stanzas has gone through some stages of polishing and editing. Finally I requested Sudhamahi Regunathan to come up with free style of trans-creation. What I have in my hand is a version of excellent text which communicates effectively the ideas in the original stanzas, in an elegant and poetic form of English.

I am very thankful to all the people who have given me a helping hand at different stages in putting together this English version titled ‘Words Well Spoken: Maxims of Earth and Stone’.

I sincerely thank former Governor Shri Gopal Gandhi ji for the analytical and encouraging foreword containing a message appealing to all that he wrote promptly on my request. I am particularly grateful to Sri M for writing the inspiring words of insight, kindness and clarity, and for helping me get this published. My deep gratitude goes to Ven Sonam Wangden who prepared the first English draft with painstaking care; and my sincere thanks to Ms. Gagan Ahluwalia for helping me to coordinate with the publisher.

My special gratitude goes to Sudhamahi Regunathan for trans-creating this text.

I thank Shri Balaji and Magenta Press for bringing out this publication in such good taste.

Editorial Reviews

My late brother Ramchandra Gandhi should have written this foreword, not I. He knew the Venerable Lama Doboom Tulku well and for many years. Besides, he was a man of highly evolved spiritual intelligence.

This collection of maxims by Lama Doboom Tulku is, however, meant for those who have seen great sections of the Light of Wisdom, and for those many more, like I, who have but caught fleeting glimpses of it, like one catches glimpses of the Kanchenjunga behind a veil of clouds.

Stones, rocks, earth and dust are the images invoked in these stanzaed maxims. They are the stuff of everyday life, if lived naturally; most of those whose destiny has transported them to cities live among cement, steel, glass and increasingly, plastic.

The images contained in Lama Doboom Tulku’s maxims will therefore instruct and also introduce or re-introduce to those substances of the earth which have grown organically, if insentiently, on its surface. They are, those substances, both witness and teachers of simple yet elusive wisdoms. They serve as symbols, as images, and mute teachers. Not all maxims in this collection will appeal equally to all, but each reader will find some maxim ringing true. I have my favourites. And I urge each reader to discover hers or his. And to do so in silent contemplation of the Sakyamuni who has left us his teachings for all time.

— Gopalkrishna Gandhi

I have known the Venerable Lama Doboom Tulku only for a year but in these matters time is of no importance. We have met maybe four times in all, which includes his visit to my residence at Madanapalle on invitation but it appears as if we have known each other for a long time.

He is a learned man, a scholar and a Sthita Prajna (of tranquil mind) and carries his high status in the Buddhist world with great dignity and utter humility. A tulku or reincarnated Lama who so modestly says, “Well there are so many reincarnated Lamas, I am just one of them.”

On two occasions I have had discussions with him and found his knowledge of religion and philosophy deep and in some ways experienced. True to his matter-of-fact and clear way of thinking he abhors superstition. When someone asked him the other day if he had been to Shambhala- the so-called secret meeting place of Masters in the Himalayas- he said with a wicked smile, “I tried to go but they didn’t give me a visa.”

This collection of verses ‘Maxims of Earth and Stone’ is a beautiful rendering of deep mystical significance. I recommend it to all those who love to dig for gold and precious ‘stones’. They are hidden deep within the bosom of the ‘Earth’.

— Sri M, Madanapalle
